Getting Your Newly Adopted Wild Horse or Burro Home

For safety reasons, the BLM requires use of a stock trailer to haul wild horses. A three-horse slantload trailer may be used if the dividers are removed. There must be no gaps between door and trailer roof, or other air spaces that are big enough for a horse to try to jump through. If you don't have a suitable trailer, you should have no trouble finding a hauler, if you adopt at a weekend Adoption Event.  This is a great service which we all appreciate, but it is important for the adopter to understand that these are private contractors, and not under hire or responsibility of the BLM.

If you adopt directly from a BLM facility, finding a hauler can be a bit more difficult.

"I want to recommend this guy who hauled our horses from Palomino Valley. Maybe you can help spread the word. He was excellent. He charges $1.00 a mile and his trailer is video and audio monitored. He is great. He didn't even complain about our road. So please pass the word on."

Ginny Freeman recommends this transporter/hauler for California and other states.  He recently hauled Spotty and all went very well.  Dave will haul horses and burros (donkeys) of any size and breed and llamas too.  He is also very reasonably priced.

NOTICE

Transportation of Animals by Private Contractors

The Bureau of Land Management does not accept any responsibility regarding the health or injury to any animals during transportation of animals from an Adoption Site by any private animal hauling contractors.

Once the BLM has loaded any animals in a private animal hauling trailer, the responsibility for the animal is the sole responsibility of the animal adopter.

The BLM strongly recommends that you carefully read and understand any contract you enter into with private animal haulers for transportation of your adopted animal regarding liability in the case of death or injury to your adopted animal.

RESOURCES:

Note: The BLM does not specifically endorse or recommend any of the people or materials on these lists. These are people who have been recommended by current successful adopters, and have been listed here as a resource for other adopters. Choose carefully and make your own decisions about the care and training of your animal.
