How do you break a wild horse? You don't!
When people speak of "breaking" a horse, they often simply mean "training."
We don't use the term "breaking" in relation to wild horses, because
of the term's association with literally breaking the horse's spirit, as was
done in the old days of "mustanging."
Wild horses do not respond well to "breaking"
techniques.
We prefer to "gentle" wild horses and burros, using humane methods based on
principles of natural horsemanship and/or operant conditioning.
Wild horses are wild, but not viciously so - they are simply afraid. They
need to learn that people are not going to hurt them, and that their adopter can
be a trustworthy leader for them.
With Training, A Mustang Can Excel in Any Discipline
| We want to stress that
the reason BLM horses are inexpensive is
simply that they lack training - not that they lack potential or value.
They need training, and with the right training they can
compete with the best of horses!
You don't have to do it yourself! In fact, you
probably should not do the early saddle training part yourself.
Most people who adopt find that the
horse does eventually come around to trust them enough for regular
handling.
But that doesn't make you a horse
trainer! Get professional help!
More and more
professional trainers are discovering how willing and teachable most wild horses
are, so it is becoming easier to find good trainers for mustangs.
A professionally-trained horse is a joy to own -
get the help you and your horse need and deserve! |
The following is a list of trainers and training information websites that we have compiled
here for the purpose of providing adopters with a starting point in looking for
help and education. It is in no way meant to be conclusive or exclusive.
| Note: The BLM does not specifically endorse or recommend any of the
people or materials on these lists. These are people who have been recommended
by current successful adopters, or who have requested to be listed. Choose carefully and make your own decisions about the care and
training of your animal. |
